TransAlta is one of Canada's largest power generation companies, which has over 50 powerplants, and generates enough power for 3.7 million homes.

CHALLENGE

TransAlta is organized into two separate business segments: Generation and Energy Marketing. The Energy Marketing division plays a key roll in optimizing asset return and reducing risk. In the energy trading industry, real time electricity and gas pricing plays a key roll in optimizing margins.

In today’s energy market, there are many shareholders and power generation company with which TransAlta does business. Having real time feeds was an essential need for the traders on the floor.

SOLUTION

Using TIBCO’s Enterprise Integration Suite and Oracle’s 9i Database running a RAC environment, EA Technologies played a key roll in architecting and designing a trader dashboard for the energy traders. This energy dashboard gave essential information to the traders such as, current weather feeds from around the country, current index commodity prices from different Independent System Operators (ISO) such as CAISO, ISO-NE, among others.

As part of the Integration solution team, EA Technologies responsibilities were:

• Team leads of Architect in designing energy trading dashboard.
• Build functional requirements for integration endpoints of the ISO feeds.
• Project management from Function Requirements to Production Support.
• Design, architect & implement a 5/9 compliant Disaster Recovery strategy
• Using TIBCO's Hawk & open source BI tools, architect and develop a production support error tracking and failure recovery application.
